Dear 16 year old me

Allie Beckwith April 2, 2017

Dear 16 year old me,

I wish so bad that you could see all the things that are about to happen to you. The whole world is telling you to care about what you look like, and who to date, and what to wear, when deep down

you

know that it’s your thoughts that set you so far apart from everyone else. Don’t get wrapped up in something as shallow as your looks. You’ll have a lot of boyfriends. Again, don’t spend too much time on this, they come and go like the sun. Keep focusing on yourself. You’ll lose yourself once or twice, and that’s okay. You surprise me every single time how you come out on top, being more self knowing than I ever thought possible. Each time, figuring out more and more clearly, exactly what you want and who you are. Bet on

you

.

Eventually you’ll finish school, YOU WILL!! Right now you’re in the middle of it and it sucks so bad. It’s one of the longest journeys thus far. But when you receive that stupid little degree in the mail, I promise you that even though you’re denying it, you’ll be proud. Stick to it. Those girls that hated you in highschool? They’re now asking you to go to coffee and they’re asking you for guidance and advice on their own lives and paths. It’s funny how that works. Try to take the highroad. You still haven’t learned to not be spiteful and still have a hard time letting go of grudges… But we’re working on that. You won’t have a million friends. You think that’s important right now, but that’s not the case. Your father, grandmother, close friends and cousins that you barely notice right now, are shaping you. You don’t even know. They will become your best friends, support system and role models.

The bossyness you’ve had since you could talk, is definitely paying off as you get older. (

While still getting you in trouble occasionally

) The outspokenness that caused you to lose a few friends, and a few million fights with your parents, is still there. Except now, it’s teaching you things like negotiation, to be business savvy and to stick up for yourself in the real world. You’ve gained a lot of confidence by 23. I know you thought your confidence would come with being “pretty” and having perfect skin and healthy hair. I hate to break it to you, but you

still

don’t think you’re pretty, you

still

have bad skin and your hair will probably never ever be healthy. But you are so much more than that, and you have so much confidence. This just shows that your confidence does not come from your looks. It comes from within, and your experience, your ambition, and your ability to do things people specifically tell you that you cannot do. IT’S SO MUCH MORE THAN YOUR LOOKS.

One thing that I love about you is that even though your accomplishments are exciting, big news and surprising to most, they aren’t so much to you. There’s something special about the energy you carry,  and knowing what you’re capable of. You knew you’d be a photographer since you were 8, you knew you would be teaching workshops, you knew you’d be speaking at high schools, you knew you’d work with Vogue Magazine. The list goes on. As it may appear to be luck, it’s not. Your work ethic that seems completely normal to you, is not the norm. Treasure this until you die. Be patient with others that don’t have it, it’s rare. Keep learning to let things go, and to not worry. You’ll learn in a couple years how to pick and choose what to worry about and soon you’ll be much happier. (this ones a big one, wait for it) The struggle is part of the story. Keep doing what you’re doing.

It’s working

.

Don’t forget to fall in love with yourself first.

xx

Allie Beckwith, age 23

Happy Sunday guys!! I'm nervous but excited to share this week's post with you. Last month,

Lou La Belle Skincare

asked me to be a part of their Love Letter campaign. It's a campaign where women write to their younger selves, as they are now. I think it's such an amazing and important thing to do, and it really really resonated with me. It was so therapeutic. I think I needed that little reflection right now. It really made me notice how the people around me, myself included, do not give themselves enough credit. I would love to read your letters to your 16 year old selves.

xx

Argus Audiology: Everything you need to know about your hearing!
March 27, 2020

When Argus Audiology reached out to me a while ago I was a little unsure about how we could partner. I’m young, why do I need to go get my hearing checked out, it really made no sense to me- at first. The more I started to think about it and as a few months went by I really started to mention to Justin more and more that I DID think I should get my hearing checked after all, (he IS always saying I'm never listening to him lol).

Travel: A weekend in Chicago, Illinois
October 1, 2019

Hey guys! I am SO excited to talk about this recent trip to Chicago. Chicago was a city I had never been to before, and I didn’t think there was much there that would be exciting. But, I was totally wrong! Chicago is a beautiful city that I now can’t wait to go back to. We had 3 days to experience it all and everything we recommend from where to stay from where to get your coffee is all below!

Home Series: Master Bathroom Reveal
July 3, 2019

IT’S HAPPENING! We are finally finished the shared master bathroom! I am so excited and we have been enjoying the finished product for about a week now, just putting together the final touches. If you remember from the original home tour when we moved in, the whole house had so much wood, and was just outdated. All of the rooms, bathroom included, were a great size and pretty good layout. They just needed a little refresh!

Art hacks
June 27, 2019

Through the many years of putting my thoughts and ideas on paper & canvas, I’ve grown long lasting relationships with supplies that allow me to create all my works that I know and love. Every artist out there knows the struggle of finding that perfect white paint that will remain faithful, or that one fine tip black pen that perfectly adds detail to their acrylics on canvas. Today I’m here to share my go-tos!

My sunless tanning routine
June 15, 2019

Hey guys!! This may be my most frequently asked question of all time, maybe tied with hair extensions (and that ones coming soon too!) Lol. I have been using this tanning foam for years and I absolutely love it. It makes you SO dark, immediately, and then develops even darker over the following few hours. The price is what seriously knocks it out of the park. It is the most affordable that I’ve ever found and no other ones even compare to it’s price.

Home Series: DIY Concrete Backsplash
June 3, 2019

Hi guys! SO excited to share this process with you. We were so stuck on what to do for our kitchen backsplash and I am so tired of seeing white subway tile in kitchens. LOL. I knew I wanted something solid coloured and that didn’t take away from anything else like our marble or butcher block.

My 3 Month Hair Growth Journey
April 11, 2019

Hi guys! Honestly I never thought I would ever be in a place to FINALLY talk about my hair growth. Lol. It has been such a struggle for me, for literally years. I could never understand it, my hair dressers could never understand it. People would always say it was probably because of my extensions, or because I would bleach it, or that it was growing. I never believed any of the above lol. My arguments were: As much as you see me with my extensions in, in photos or at events, is maybe 2 times per month. I do mainly all of my shooting in one day for Instagram & the blog. And I very rarely get ready and go anywheres Lol. I work from home every day barley brush my hair. So to think that my extensions were ruining my hair, just did not convince me. Bleaching it, of course dries your hair out, so I took 6+ month long breaks between getting my hair done for the past, almost 2 years, and still nothing. I did frequent hair treatments to make sure the moisture was locked in and that my ends were never getting to dry.
